Genesis Chapter 1
Genesis begins with
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth," a statement
of the creation of all that exists (see also The First Scientist and Hydrogen; also How Old Is God?). It then continues with a more earth-specific account of how the
earth cooled, allowed light through the dense atmosphere, formed continents and
oceans, and then living creatures.
The first day: "Let
there be light." Sunlight penetrated to the earth's surface through the
dense, hot primordial atmosphere (Genesis 1:3-5).
The second day: The earth
cooled further so that there was a definite separation between the atmosphere
and the water-covered surface i.e. "separated the waters which were under
the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament" (Genesis
1:6-8).
The third day: Dry ground
and seas formed on the surface; plant life began (Genesis 1:9-13).
The fourth day: With the
atmosphere now transparent, the sun, moon and stars became visible "for
signs and for seasons and for days and years" (Genesis 1:14-19). The
heavens were to be used as the basis of the calendar, not for idolatry (see Sun Worship).
The fifth day: Water
creatures and birds began (Genesis 1:20-23).
The sixth day: Land
animals and humans (Genesis 1:24-31).
Genesis Chapter 2
With the six days of the
physical creation complete, God rested on the seventh day and made it holy (see
"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it
Holy" and The Key To The Calendar)
"And on the seventh
day God finished His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day
from all His work which He had done. So God blessed the seventh day and
hallowed it, because on it God rested from all His work which He had done in
creation." (Genesis 2:2-3 RSV)
Chapter 2 then provides a
more specific account of the creation of mankind; a man alone, then a woman in
Eden.
"The Lord God took
the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it."
(Genesis 2:15 RSV)
"Then The Lord God
said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a
helper fit for him." (Genesis 2:18 RSV)
So The Lord God caused a
deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and
closed up its place with flesh; and the rib which The Lord God had taken from
the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said,
"This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be
called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." (Genesis 2:21-23 RSV)
Genesis Chapter 3
The fall of man,
"man" referring to the species as a whole i.e. "God created man
in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He
created them" (Genesis 1:27 RSV).
God's order to not eat
"of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil" was given to the male
man before the woman was created (Genesis 2:15-18), but the woman was fully
aware of the command when Satan spoke to her.
"And the woman said to the serpent, "We
may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; but God said, 'You shall not
eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall
you touch it, lest you die.'" (Genesis 3:2-3 RSV)
Nevertheless, the woman,
and the man who was right there with her, succumbed to Satan's lies.
"So when the woman saw that the tree was
good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to
be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave
some to her husband, and he ate." (Genesis 3:6 RSV)
For their disobedience to
The Lord, the humans were driven out of Eden into a carnal world in which they
would be subject to death.
"To the woman he
said, "I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you
shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he
shall rule over you."
And to Adam he said,
"Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of
the tree of which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the
ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
thorns and thistles it shall bring forth to you; and you shall eat the plants
of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to
the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall
return."
The man called his wife's
name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
And The Lord God made for
Adam and for his wife garments of skins, and clothed them. Then The Lord God
said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil;
and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat,
and live for ever" - therefore The Lord God sent him forth from the garden
of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man; and
at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim, and a flaming sword
which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life." (Genesis
3:16-24 RSV)
